Phayre's Lemonade Party // Happy Second Birthday Phayre Bear!

For the last couple of months I've been asking P what she wants for her second birthday and every time she answers, "pizza and lemonade!"  At first I thought it was funny and tried coaxing her into telling me what kind of toy or thing she'd like and finally I realized she was serious!  Girlfriend wanted pizza and lemonade for her birthday so that's just what she got!

We celebrated our sweet Phayre Bear all weekend long! She got her very first pedicure at a nail salon and got all of the Monster's Inc. toys and babydolls that her little heart desired.  We ended the perfect weekend with a small lemonade party and it turned out to be so darling.  I started planning her party a few months ago because I knew being almost 37 weeks pregnant would make it a little challenging to host a party!  I kept it small and simple and it ended up being one of my favorite parties we've ever hosted!

We used the white stand that Eric made last year for P's flamingesta first birthday party as a lemonade stand and that was really the only thing I decorated.  Everyone hung out in the backyard, we ate lots of pizza (and watermelon and cucumbers per P's request), and all of the kids played with the water table, play house, and sandbox.  It was super relaxed and we loved entertaining on our new deck!  Phayre had an absolute blast, she was surrounded by most of her favorite people and Eric and I felt so much love in our home.  I still just cannot believe our girl is two!!!

This drink dispenser was a wedding gift from eight years ago, I couldn't find anything similar to link!

#themomblogcollective // 5 tips for starting a blog and instagram

Hey babes!  I get asked all the time on  Instagram how and why I started blogging and decided to have a public social media account.  I've gotten together with nine other mamas (who I adore!) and we've started a new series called #TheMomBlogCollective.  Twice a month we'll share about a topic related to blogging or influencing-how to get started, social media, working with brands, photography, motherhood, and more!  We will all answer the same question so you can read each of our perspectives.  We have a wide variety of styles so there should be something for everyone! If you have a question you'd like answered, please comment at the bottom of this post!!

Up first, we're all sharing our top 5 tips for starting a blog and/or Instagram.

When I was first asked to share on this topic, I really didn't feel qualified!  I sort of fell into blogging and feel so lucky to have found success.  I had a much different start than most bloggers and I think it's important to share why.  I actually started a public Instagram account because I had a handmade shop.  When Sloan was a baby I sold little handmade bracelets with charms and tassels on them.  My shop was more successful than I could have ever dreamed, but it was also very time consuming.  It became harder and harder to run my shop after Phayre was born (my second daughter) and eventually I decided to close up so that I could focus solely on being a stay at home mama.

Because I love photography (mostly just photographing my kiddos!) and because I had made so many great relationships on Instagram, I decided to keep my account public.  I continued sharing photos of my girls and little bits about our life.  People kept saying, "You should start a blog, you should share more!"  So I did!  And my blog has brought me so many opportunities and has been the perfect way to document my quickly growing babies.

My Top 5 Tips for Starting a Blog and Instagram

1. Decide what you're passionate about, what void you're filling, and why you want to blog.  Write it down (sort of like a mission statement!).

When I first decided to start a blog, I sat down and wrote down what I wanted to blog about.  I knew that I wanted to share about my family and my adventures in motherhood, connect with other mothers, and document my family as we grow and change.  My main focus was to be as real as possible, while still respecting my families privacy and safety.  Writing a lifestyle blog allows me to write about everything I'm passionate about and experiencing, but I always try to come back to my main focus-documenting my adventures in motherhood.

Really think about why you want to blog and what your main focus will be.  Brainstorm topics from there, but keep within your initial focus.  This will help you create a brand, people will know what to expect when they visit your posts.  To really hone in on your focus, answer these questions: What makes you different than all of the other bloggers out there? Why will people be interested in your life and your passions?  What's your niche... Do you love to write?  Are you a natural storyteller?  Is photography your passion?  Etc.  Answering these questions (and more!) will help guide you in the right direction when it comes to your goals or your "mission" as a blogger.

There have been times when my blog and social media has become overwhelming and I just feel burned out.  I always go back to the why.  Why did I start my blog?  When I revisit why I started blogging and what it has brought to my life, I am always able to refocus and get back on track.

2. Choose the perfect name and make sure it's available.

This is huge, take it from someone who's had to change their social media handles.  My bracelet shop was called Sloan and Co., which worked perfectly when I had one daughter.  Once Phayre was born and I decided to transition from a shop to a blog, my name didn't fit anymore.  It took me awhile to not only think of the perfect name, but also find a name that was available on all social media platforms.  And changing my name on every social media platform was a major pain!

When deciding on a name, choose something that is meaningful to you, won't ever change (don't name your business after your child if you plan on having more children!), and is catchy.  Take your time and come up with the perfect name.  Remember, you're creating a brand so your name is important!

Once you have some ideas, search to make sure that those names are available on all social media channels and that you can purchase the domain name.

3. Choose a host and invest in your blog.

I didn't think about this when I first started blogging, but a successful blog becomes a brand.  If you're hoping to grow and make money through your blog, you need to look like a cohesive brand.  It doesn't take a ton of money, but you should invest in your blog.  You want your brand to reflect your style and message and with blogging you usually only have one chance to grab someones attention.

Choose a blog host (most bloggers use blogger or wordpress, do some research and choose what's right for you).  Once you have a blog, purchase your domain (website) name and a blog template (there are thousands of super inexpensive templates available on etsy).  You may even want to think about hiring a graphic designer to create a logo for you.  These are simple things that won't cost a ton, but will make your blog look legitimate.  You want your blog to be visually appealing and cohesive so that people want to come back!

4. Be social (on social media!).

Once you've started your blog, choose 1-2 social media platforms to focus on and get social!  Social media is a great way to promote and drive traffic to your blog.  Each platform can be really time consuming though!  Do your best to be really active on one or two platforms.

Once you've decided what platforms work for you, make sure you're interacting with your followers.  Answer comments and messages regularly.  Follow others and try to virtually mingle by liking and commenting on their photos/posts.  Make friends and support each other!

5. Just DO IT!  And be yourself.

I drug my feet forrrrrever when it came to starting my blog and I wish I wouldn't have!  If sharing is something you're passionate about, just go for it!  Even if you don't have a flock of followers right away, stick to your true passion and be yourself.  If you're being genuine and real, people will come!

When I was thinking about starting my blog I knew I wanted to share, but I was really afraid of being judged.  As my blog and Instagram have grown, I have been judged.  Sometimes unfairly and it hurts when people perceive you wrong.  BUT, I have always stayed true to myself and kept my focus in mind.  I have made real friendships and been afforded wonderful opportunities because of my blog and Instagram.  Bottom line, it's all been worth it and I'm really proud of what I've accomplished!  If this is something that you want to do, do it! Be yourself and don't let anyone bring you down.  Just go for it!

I hope these were helpful!  I will be back in two weeks with a new topic, but let me know if you have any other questions below!

What's in My Diaper Bag

Ok ok, I know I have been promising to update this post forever (I'm sorry!).  Since P has potty trained, I haven't needed much in my diaper bag though.  As I prepare for baby brother, I've been thinking about what I'll need and more importantly, what bag will work for me.  I can't believe I'm going to have a newborn and THREE kids so soon!  Eeeeep.

When it comes to a diaper bag, I need something with space, organization, and it obviously has be to stylish!  I just started using the new Itzy Ritzy Tribe tote diaper bag and I LOVE how spacious it is.  I can stay organized so easily with all of the pockets and compartments.  It is perfect for a mama with multiple children, I especially love how the center (main) compartment is split into two sections.  I chose the coffee and cream color combination and I love the fabrics to much.  The mix of colors and textures makes the bag go with absolutely everything.  Itzy Ritzy actually has two diaper bag styles and a backpack style, and they're all available in three different colors.  You can see all of the styles on Itzy Ritzy's new website here!

When packing my diaper bag, I try to always be prepared for the worst, without overpacking.  After two babies, I know exactly what I might need and what things I can leave behind.

What's In My Diaper Bag

The bag: I am loving the new Tribe tote diaper bag by Itzy Ritzy, definitely check it out if you have multiple children!

Diapering: I'm not super picky when it comes to diapers.  For baby brother, I just got some Babyganics newborn diapers and they are super soft.  I usually pack 4 diapers and a package of wipes in my diaper bag.  The Tribe diaper bag includes a changing pad.

Extra clothes: For the girls, I usually pack each of them a dress and extra panties.  I go with dresses because it's an entire outfit in one (rather than a top and pants).  When they were younger, I would usually pack pajamas (again because it's an entire outfit in one).  I also throw in a hat and sweater.

Food/drink: Snacks, snacks, and more snacks.  If there is one thing I don't ever leave the house without, it's snacks.  I try to pack snacks that are healthy and not messy (like dried fruit, nuts, and cut up fruits and veggies).  I also always pack Phayre a sippy cup and a bib, I love the spill proof cups from Replay recycle and the waterproof silicone roll up bib from oxo tot.

For baby, I always pack my nursing cover.  If you're not nursing, you'll need one bottle and formula (those little formula dispensers are really handy!).

Comfort items: Think pacifiers and special toys or blankets.  We never leave the house without P's Boo doll, although she holds it and it doesn't go in my bag.  I do always have a small swaddle blanket rolled up in my bag.  Just in case we get caught out somewhere and one of the girls needs to take a snooze on the go.  I also always have a few activity packs in my diaper bag, these really come in handy at restaurants (I get them at Michael's craft store for $1 each, each pack has a little coloring book, crayons, and stickers).

First aid/clean up: I always have wipes, hand sanitizer, a sunscreen stick, and disposable bags with me (these come in handy if anyone has an accident/blowout!).  I also always have a small thermometer, a few bandaids, and some infant Tylenol in my bag, just in case!

I hope this list helps you mama's feel more prepared while you're out with your kiddos!  There's a fine line between being prepared and overpacking.  Once you've figured out what you and your kids actually need, you'll be prepared for anything without feeling like you've brought half your house with you!

Definitely check out all of the new diaper bags on the new Itzy Ritzy website!  Tune in to my Instagram on Tuesday (8/1) for a chance to win an Itzy Ritzy diaper bag!!!

Breastfeeding Essentials

My breastfeeding journeys were so different with each of my girls.  If I'm being totally honest, I'm a little anxious about breastfeeding again.  You'd think by the third time around I wouldn't be anxious, but I most certainly am.  Breastfeeding has never been easy for me, I've always struggled with keeping my supply up and had to work really hard to nurse my babes.  I really need to share my experiences with breast feeding, but I'll save that for another post.  Today, I want to share my top breast feeding essentials-all the stuff I've picked up in preparation for baby brother!

Nursing bras and tank tops
My all time favorite nursing bra is this Cake Maternity bra, I actually have two of them.  I also love this wireless nursing bra.  For sleep, I love this seamless nursing bra.  I wear nursing tanks a lot under my clothing, this one if my favorite (I have it in several colors).

Nursing nightgowns
I love nursing nightgowns and find them to be most comfortable for nighttime nursing.  This dot nightgown and this super soft nightgown are my all time faves.  I also love this tank top and shorts pajama set by Ingrid and Isabel.

Nursing pillow
I have tried a few different nursing pillows and I always go back to the boppy.  It's perfect for nursing and can be used for so many other things.  The pink cover in the photo above is from Madly Wish.

Nursing cover
I've also tried a few different nursing covers and my absolute favorite is the Covered Goods nursing cover.

Nipple cream
It is SO important that you use nipple cream in the very beginning!  Your nipples will be sore and the only cream that I've found to be soothing is the Earth Mama Angel Baby Natural Nipple Butter.

Breast pump, pumping bra, and milk storage bags
Even if you don't plan on going back to work, there will be times you'll need a breast pump.  Especially in the beginning when your milk comes in and you're engorged.  Get yourself a good double breast pump and pumping bra.  You'll also need milk storage bags.  You may also need breast pads, I've never had enough extra milk to need breast pads.

Breast therapy packs and breast shells
In the beginning, it can be really painful to breastfeed.  I've thought for sure I was doing things wrong because I was in so much pain in the beginning.  But after visiting lactation and learning that my babies have a great latch, I've learned that I just have super sensitive nipples.  I have found some relief by using breast therapy packs and breast shells.

Water and healthy snacks
In order to keep your supply up, make sure you drink A LOT of water.  You'll also need to keep your calories up, so make sure you eat lots of healthy snacks.  I absolutely love Oat Mama bars, they taste great and help boost your milk supply.
